1. Introduction
Northeast Normal University(NENU) was founded in 1946. With more than 70 years of development, NENU has formed a distinctive characteristic of "Serving Basic Education" and is known as the "cradle of teachers". NENU is a key national university under the Ministry of Education’s "211 Project" and "985 Project Innovation Platform for Dominant Disciplines". In 2017, NENU has been selected as one of the "Double First-Class" universities.
Furthermore, NENU is the first national HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) examination site and one of the first BCT (Business Chinese Test) examination sites established in Northeast China. Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs respectively set up "International Chinese Language Teacher Training Base", "Chinese Culture Education Base", "Education Aid Base" and "China-ASEAN Education Training Center" at NENU.
Established in 2010, the Department of Preparatory Education for International Students of Northeast Normal University is one of the first seven bases of preparatory education for undergraduate students coming to China with Chinese government scholarships. There are 33 regular teachers in the DepartmentofPreparatoryEducation, including 26 doctors and 7 masters. As the training unit of Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, the Department has strong teachers with rich teaching experience. To improve the training quality of preparatory students, the Department has always insisted on a "strong alliance" with the traditionally advantageous disciplines of NENU and formulated more targeted teaching and training programs for preparatory students, which fully ensures the teaching and training quality of preparatory students. Up to now, the Department has trained more than 2,000 students from 121 countries around the world, and many of them have become the backbone of embassies and consulates, Chinese enterprises, universities, and research institutions.
2. Features of the Preparatory Courses
For many years, the Department has always adhered to the educational concept of "respecting and creative education", and made efforts to build a "NENU Preparatory Brand" with first-class teaching, first-class management and first-class practice.
1) Implement a preparatory intensive teaching model based on the principle of ‘leading listening and speaking, combining teaching assistance, strict management, and humanistic care.’ This involves using the learning in China’s series of self-edited Chinese intensive teaching materials, developing an examination system, and comprehensively improving listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The teaching goal is to reach HSK level 4 in one semester and HSK level 5 in one academic year.
2)Build a multi-dimensional student management system. With the hierarchical linkage management of counselors, head teachers, and life head teachers as the structure, student attendance, daily performance, examination results, headteacher evaluation, comprehensive evaluation, etc. are reminded and supervised in real time to achieve real-time, efficient, and scientific management.
3)Build an immersive learning practice classroom. Taking calligraphy competitions, reading competitions, singing competitions, traditional Chinese cultural experiences, visits to scenic spots, and historical sites as the medium. Chinese learning is applied to practice, stimulates interest, and enhances their understanding and love for China.
