I. Applicant Qualifications
1. Non-Chinese citizens.
2. In good physical and mental health, with excellent academic performance and conduct, and in compliance with Chinese laws, regulations, and university rules.
3. Applicants for a master's degree must hold a bachelor's degree(or equivalent), have an excellent academic record, and be under 35 years old.
4. Former Chinese citizens who have acquired foreign nationality and apply to our University as international students must have held a valid foreign passport or nationality certificate for four years or longer (inclusive), and must have actually resided abroad for at least two years within the most recent four years (as of April 30, 2026). (An actual residence abroad of nine months or more within a calendar year shall be counted as one year, subject to the entry and exit stamps.)
5. Language requirements:
- Chinese-taught programs: HSK Level 5 with a score of 180 or above. Applicants who obtained a degree from a Chinese university with Chinese as the language of instruction are exempt from submitting HSK.
- English-taught programs: TOEFL 80 or above or IELTS 6.0 or above, or English is the native/official language, or a degree obtained with English as the medium of instruction.

III. Application Period
From now until June 22, 2026 (Beijing Time).
IV. Application Procedures
1. After preparing the application materials, log in to the NENU International Student Service System (http://studyatnenu.nenu.edu.cn or https://nenu.17gz.org) to register. Fill in personal information in Chinese or English as required, upload the required documents, and pay the application fee of RMB 800 online.
2. The University will conduct a professional competence review and contact applicants by email to confirm the time for an online interview.
3. The University will notify applicants of the final admission results by email before the end of July.
V. Application Materials
1. Passport information page and Chinese visa pages (if any). The passport must be valid beyond September 2026. All Chinese visa pages must be uploaded.
2. Notarized degree certificates (from the undergraduate level onward). Applicants who are current students must submit a Certificate of Expected Graduation issued by their current university. Applicants must obtain the required degree before September 2026. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be accompanied by notarized translations into Chinese or English.
3. Academic transcripts (from the undergraduate level onward). Scanned copies must include records for bachelor's, master's (if any), and doctoral (if any) studies up to the most recent semester. Transcripts must be issued and stamped by the Academic Affairs Office, Graduate School, or other relevant student administration department. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be accompanied by notarized translations into Chinese or English.
4. Language proficiency certificate.
- Chinese-taught: a valid HSK Level 5 certificate; applicants who have obtained a degree taught in Chinese at a Chinese university must provide the relevant proof.
- English-taught: TOEFL ≥ 80 or IELTS ≥ 6.0, or proof of an English-medium degree.
5. Research proposal. A research proposal in Chinese or English (at least 1000 words) is required. For doctoral applicants, it must be signed by the intended NENU supervisor. Template available at the Download section of the Studyatnenu website (https://iso.nenu.edu.cn/Download.htm).
6. Two recommendation letters. Written only in Chinese or English by professors or associate professors shall be submitted. The letters should be signed by the recommenders and indicate their identity and contact information. These letters shall describe the applicant's objective of learning in China, comprehensive abilities, and evaluation of future growth, as well as the cooperation between the supervisors or the exchange between universities both in China and abroad.
7. Portfolio (if applicable). Applicants for arts or design majors should submit samples of personal work (such as videos or artwork).
8. The Physical Examination Form for Foreigners. The Form is issued by the Chinese quarantine authority and must be completed in English. Template available at the Download section of the StudyatNENU website(https://iso.nenu.edu.cn/Download.htm). The physical examinations must cover all the items listed in the Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital, or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. Please select the appropriate time to take a physical examination, as the result is valid for only 6 months.
9. Non-criminal record. The applicant shall submit a valid certificate of Non-criminal record issued by the local public security authority, usually issued within 6 months before the submission date of the application.
10. Academic achievements (if any). Such as published papers or patent certificates.
11. Conditional acceptance letter (if any). Applicants may contact supervisors for the conditional acceptance letter(optional). Template available at the Download section of the StudyatNENU website(https://iso.nenu.edu.cn/Download.htm). 12. Other supporting documents as required by the International Students Office.
Note: All uploaded documents must be clear, authentic, and valid. Applicants should use professional scanning devices and bear responsibility for unclear materials.
VI. Fees
1. Application fee: RMB 800
2. Tuition:
- Humanities and Social Sciences: RMB 18,600 per year
- Natural Sciences: RMB 23,000 per year
- Arts and Physical Education: RMB 26,000 per year
3. Other fees:
1) Insurance: RMB 800 per year
2) Accommodation: RMB 40/day (single room)
3) Meals: RMB 1,000–1,500/month
VII. Scholarships
1. Chinese Government Scholarship – Bilateral Program (Type A)
Apply through the dispatching authorities in your home country, typically the local Chinese Embassy or Consulate. For the specific application period and procedures, please consult the relevant dispatching authorities. All master's majors are eligible. Applicants whose language proficiency does not yet meet the requirements for academic study may apply for one year of Chinese language preparatory study.
2. Chinese Government Scholarship – NENU “High-level Graduates” Program (Type B)
Apply directly to NENU. All master's majors are eligible. For detailed procedures, please refer to the Admission Guidelines for the Chinese Government Scholarship “High-level Graduates” Program (Type-B) of Northeast Normal University 2026–2027.
3. International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship
Applicants majoring in International Chinese Education may apply for the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship. Applications should be submitted directly to Northeast Normal University. For detailed application requirements and required materials, please refer to the Admission Guidelines for the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship of Northeast Normal University (to be released by mid-February 2026).
4. NENU Presidential Scholarship for Outstanding International Students
To encourage international students to be diligent and motivated, enhance the University's reputation, and attract more outstanding international students, NENU has established the Presidential Scholarship for Outstanding International Students. This is a full scholarship. Each year, a comprehensive evaluation will be conducted among newly admitted self-funded students, with selection based on academic performance, language proficiency, overall competence, and development potential, and the scholarship will be awarded to the outstanding candidates.
VIII. Notes
1. The application fee is non-refundable, regardless of the admission result.
2. If necessary, the University will contact applicants via email (admission@nenu.edu.cn) to request supplementary supporting materials and to inform them of admission results. Please ensure the email address provided on the application form is accurate.
3. Admission qualification will not be retained if the applicant fails to register on time. Students cannot invite family members without permission from the hosting university.
4. All application materials must be submitted again upon registration. Applicants are responsible for the authenticity of the information provided and the materials submitted. If any inconsistency with the facts is found, the University reserves the right to cancel the admission; for those already registered, student status will be revoked.
